Delhi Crime Drama Series NetMirror | Based on a True Story
Another chilly night of aimless tossing and twisting in my bed. My mind racing with different types of thoughts, craving for another Hindi Drama Series. This time, it turned out to be Delhi Crime. At first, I refused to watch something so brutal and inhumane. But remembering that the culprits have been sentenced and got what they deserved after committing so heinous, I decided otherwise. Again, I watched the whole season 1 (Seven Episodes) in one go and was mesmerized with the way the true story was reenacted by the seasoned actors. Let’s dig deeper and explore the plot, characters and the main theme of Delhi Crime Drama Series.
The Plot of Delhi Crime
Remembered as the Nirbhaya case, the most brutal gang rape and murder took place in Delhi on December 16, 2012. Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, was brutally gang-raped, tortured, and murdered in one of the private buses in Delhi. She was traveling with her friend, Awindra Pratap Pandey, who was also tortured and assaulted. The attackers comprised six men, with one juvenile at the time. Singh was rushed to a hospital but was transferred to Singapore later, where she finally succumbed to her injuries.
The crime led to massive public protests and outrage all across India demanding better security for women and justice for the victim. The case was proactively investigated and Singh became a symbol of women’s resistance to violence. The accused were arrested and tried; Ram Singh died in police custody under suspicious circumstances. In 2013, four adult men—Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, and Mukesh Singh—were convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to death. The juvenile, Mohammed Afroz, received three years in a reform facility.
The case led to legal reforms, including the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013. It aimed at making much-needed reforms to the prosecution of sex crimes. Despite these changes, there have been criticisms of the slow legal process. The four adult convicts were eventually executed in March 2020. The victim’s father expressed regret over unmet promises of justice, although the case prompted significant public discourse on crimes against women in India.
